FSYF Transfer Season Resources for Families with Children


Check out the many resources the Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF) offers to families transitioning with children.Families Transferring to the DC Area
  • Reentry Programs
    • High School Reentry Seminar, August 17, 6 to 9 pm: Helps repatriating high school students and their parents adjust to American high school life and local teen social culture. 
    • Middle School Reentry Seminar, August 19, 1 to 3 pm: Helps repatriating middle school students and their parents adjust to life in American middle schools. 
  • Welcome Back Picnic, September 16, 4 to 6 pm: A traditional American cookout with food and classic picnic games.
  • Youth Meet Ups: variety of events organized throughout the year.
  • Welcome Home Videos: Families considering moving to Arlington, Falls Church, Herndon, Stafford, or Vienna, VA, can view Foreign Service youth-produced videos profiling these communities. 
 Families Transferring Overseas
  • KidVids: Videos that FS youth has created depicting life at overseas posts from a kid’s perspective. 
  • Raising Children Overseas Video: A talk by Dr. Elmore Rigamer, a renowned child psychologist who was the Department of State's first-ever regional psychiatrist (September 2015).

SDFCU is happy to provide a Seminar presented by CU Realty Realtor, Arturo Cruz. This seminar will provide a market overview of the surrounding real estate market, ideas on choosing/using a realtor, as well as a basic overview of what you should expect with the home buying process.

Specific focus will be designed to answer the following:

  3. General Home Buying Process Flow.
  4. What to expect throughout the process?
  5. Questions & Answer period for your personal questions.

A Mortgage Specialist will also be available after the presentation for questions in reference to your home financing!

Today's Event: Diplomacy at Home for the Holidays

Today, The Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, will host Diplomacy at Home for the Holidays for 350 unaccompanied tour family members.  For those who are able to join us, we look forward to seeing you today.  For those who are unable to join us, we want to invite you to take part in some of the exciting virtual opportunities offered by our partnership with Skype and the Department of State.  If you have any questions about how to join via Skype please contact FLOaskUT@state.gov

Holiday Party at the State Department

The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State, will host Diplomacy at Home for the Holidays, a reception for family members of unaccompanied tour employees this December at the Department of State. This is a wonderful opportunity for family members in the Washington D.C. area to get into the holiday spirit and to honor the work, service and sacrifice of State Department men and women that are currently on unaccompanied tours.


In order to receive an official invitation, please contact FLOaskUT@state.gov for details within the next week.  Please note that ‘Family’ is defined broadly to include spouse, partner, fiancĂ©, parent, sibling, and children of anyone under Chief of Mission at an unaccompanied tour posting.
